"The thirst" is a ceramic installation of two works, curated by Vania Montgomery, and exhibited at the XIV Muestra Regional of the MAM, Museo de Arte Moderno de Chiloé, in 2022. The first work, installated above a sand box, shown cages made of spanish stoneware besides nets made of earthenware from Chiloé. The second work is a series of porcelain pieces made from castings of tear gas shells (you can read more about this work here).

THE THIRST

"Between shards of cages open and closed, drought holes and mud from various places, Gaspar Álvarez Requena shapes the surfaces that appear in this room. What here unfolds began on the understanding that matter focus the surrounding senses and gathers the signs of specific moments witnessed. So, bones, objects and cracks may speak of what they've seen and covered, of the stories and lifespans they've deal with. Sense is not just in who looks and touches, but also lies in what is always there, watching us.

The artist's works whisper the long journey of its happenings: red clay, extracted and kneaded by the bare feet of Elvia Ule, huilliche potter, that today leads to red open nets, like fragments of fishing nets; spanish stoneware, engine-produced by some factory and now building metallic-like closed cages, akin to the salmon-farming ones; tear gas and shells of glaze and porcelain, made to silence.

The thirst are the stories, vibrations and exudations of life shining between each section of ceramic. The thirst is the sounding for land-beats, the surrounding walls and the time layers carved on the wrappings. The thirst is a decantation of the desire that carries all above, for what wishes to be told, seen and lit up."
